Portland’s annual ‘city-wide festival of new works’ offers a winter cornucopia of creativity, showcasing original works of theater, dance and comedy with a fierce focus on the fresh and local. The Fertile Ground Festival presents 11 days of varied entertainment at venues all across town. Some events are free and some are ticketed, but a festival pass is the most cost-efficient way to maximize your enjoyment.
Animating Life: The Art, Science, and Wonder of LAIKA | January – May 20th | Portland Art Museum
Portland’s animation company LAIKA is famous for stop-action animated features such as Kubo and the Two Strings, Coraline, and The Boxtrolls. The Portland Art Museum and the Northwest Film Center have collaborated to bring us unique behind-the-scenes insight into the technology and artistry of the animation studio productions. Brewvana’s Mississippin’ Walking Tour | Brewvana Brewery
Explore North Portland’s most transformed neighborhood while sampling craft beer! The tour begins at Ecliptic Brewing, stops at Stormbreaker, and ends at Brewvana where you’ll get a history of the neighborhood and a final round of beers from Hopworks BikeBar.

Portland’s 35th annual Reel Music Festival celebrates genres such as jazz, blues, rock, electronic, classical, world, and few and far between.
Rose City Classic Dog Show | January 17 – January 21st | Portland Expo Center
Hosted by the Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon & the Tualatin Kennel Club, the Rose City Classic is one of the largest and most popular dog events in the United States representing more than 185 breeds!
